FAKE EYELIDS?! EYELID GLUE AND TAPE REVIEW

19 November 2014 • No comments

Ever since I was around 15/16, I noticed that my eyes were obviously not the same as Western people. For example: my eyes are not hollow as my brow bone is not very prominent, there is a lot of excess skin on my eyelid which droops downwards (hooded eyelids) and makes the eyes look significantly smaller and appear to look more tired. Therefore I wanted to make my eyes appear a bit bigger and not look as droopy.

I came across a blog post which had all the technical terms of the structures between Caucasian and more Eastern Asian eyes (I'm using words in my own terms and these may not be correct) and how to change the look of eyes by changing the shape and size of eyelids. The blogger has taken her site down/ no longer exists (loewemyli on Xanga).

Curious, I started to try out different ways to create a bigger crease, starting with eyelid glue and followed by eyelid tape after reading several blogs, reviews and watching recommendations on Youtube. Over the first year I started to try it out, I purchased several different types of eyelid tape in Hong Kong and also an eyelid glue which I read lots about in other blogs and saw the differences before and after usage.

The best review I found on Youtube a few years ago was one by Ava Yu Kiu, who is somewhat famous in Hong Kong and as stated in her video, she didn't want magazines to criticise her on her eyelid tape falling off or something like that. I recommend watching this video on Youtube  as this is where most of my information comes from and this is why I use the products for my eyelids today.

You can use eyelid glue or tape to enhance your eyelids, if you have monolids or if your eyelids are starting to sag with excess skin. It is not only for Eastern Asians to use on their small eyes! I would advise to gradually increase the size of your eyelid if you want it to become permanent and not just for a night out for example. This is because going from having monolids to having huge eyelids will not look natural at all and if you do not have much excess skin, your eyes will not be able to shut fully whilst looking natural and this results in dry eyeballs (I've tried this and it was not cool). Instead, just place the glue or tape above your eyelid a millimetre or two and let your eyelid skin stretch a tad, little by little until you get the desired size of your eyelid crease.

So, to stop waffling on so much/ to waffle on even more, I'll show you the products I use and tell you a bit more about them and when I started to use it. This is going to save you from having double eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) so it's practically how to have the results surgery without having surgery!... With a bit of fuss.

KOJI EYE TALK- EYELID GLUE

The glue comes in a small bottle with a brush on the lid for easy application. The fork is used to position the desired eyelid crease and to push it in place.

Before and after using eyelid glue.

Results after using eye glue (not too much pressure applied to make it look slightly natural)

As you can see, the first photo is what my eyelids look like usually but there is a lot of excess skin that droops over my eye and appears to look very heavy. After adjusting my eyelids, I feel like I look more awake theres just less skin hanging over my eyeball. You can see in the final photos that my original eyelid crease is still visible, I have just created another crease above and I like the way that the eyelid isn't so close to the inner corner of my eye and is lifted up slightly.

I like to use eyelid glue when I wake up one day and my eyelid has popped out of shape or is slightly puffy or swollen for some reason (as you can see in the second group of photos). I would advise you to put makeup on before applying the glue. This is because when you apply the glue first and then put on foundation or eyeshadow on top, you will be able to see where the glue has been applied and it will no longer be transparent, as well as being less sticky.

I used eyelid glue for about a year every single day and after that I more or less got a permanent double eyelid. It really works!

Application:
  1. Find the desired crease line by prodding around with the fork.
  2. Using the brush with the glue, glue a line where you would like to create the crease.
  3. Wait for the glue to dry and become transparent.
  4. Using the fork, poke/ prod the eyelid in place using gentle pressure. If going out, don't push too hard as it can make the eyelid look unnatural.
Removal:
  • Place warm water soaked on a cotton pad onto the eyes for about a minute and the eye glue will become visible again.
  • Rub the glue gently at the edge and you'll be able to remove and pull off the glue in one go.
I like to set in my eyelid by lowering my chin, frowning and looking up so you can actually feel the eyelids, although this may be a bit strange to do!

Pros
  • If your eyelid pops out of place, you can easily glue or prod the crease back in.
  • Simple and easy to use.
  • Convenient to just pop in your bag without too much fuss when going out.
  • Not painful at all as much as it may look.
  • Can use it as eyelash glue too!

Cons

  • If the crease is pushed in too hardly, the results may look unnatural. It will also look unnatural if you keep readjusting the size and shape of the lid by pulling what you've just glued and re-adjusting the lid.
  • Glue will look obvious when makeup is applied on top.
  • If you rub your eyes, it can cause the glue to form little glueballs which can look messy on your eyes!
  • The eyelid glue smells a bit fishy! But once dry, you can't smell it.

D-UP WONDER EYELID TAPE - DOUBLE SIDED EYELID TAPE

As you can see, the strips of tape are very thin, around 1mm in height each and the corners become slimmer which is useful to get a more natural shape // Old packaging of the eyelid tape and you can see in the diagram that the tape will be hidden inbetween the folds of your skin. I bought this pack several years ago which is why it is $68!

Instructions that come with the pack.

!Excuse my lizard looking eyes without makeup!

The first photo is what my eyelid looks like without glue (had to wait for an anomaly day where my eyelid went back to normal). Here, I'm using the Wonder Eyelid Tape . It is a thin, double sided strip of tape which comes with a sort of open tweezer for easy application. However, I personally find it hard to use and prefer to use normal tweezers and my fingers.

Application
  1.  Peel off the cover to the tape.
  2.  Find where you want to make your crease, using a bobby pin or the fork prodder if you have one.
  3.  Using tweezers, fingers or the open tweezers provided/ any other method you can think of, remove the strip of tape from the sheet.
  4. Place the strip/tape on the place where you want your new crease to be, I'd advise to put it just a tiny bit above your normal eyelid as the skin will need to fold over the tape and you may not have much excess skin on your eyelids.
  5. Tug above the eyelid slightly so the skin can stretch and fold over the tape. Watch the video I linked above if you're unsure of this process!
  6. Prod your eyelid into place with a bobby pin or the fork if needed to push the tape in to place slightly.
Removal
  • Gently tug above and below where the tape was placed.
  • In circular motions, starting from the inner corner of the eye and going outwards, rub on the tape.
  • Gently pull the tape off the eyelid.

Pros
  • If applied correctly, it can be well hidden and as it is double sided, the eyelid will hold in shape all day.
  • Extra strong stickiness to hold the crease in shape.
  • Can be reapplied without looking obvious/ new tape can be applied easily.
Cons
  • If not applied right, the corners of the tape can become very irritating to the eye, causing discomfort
  • Can lose stickiness if many layers makeup is applied on top.
  • May be able to see the tape if the excess skin has not covered it.
  • If you rub your eyes excessively, the tape may start to come off.
  • The tape is very thin and can be quite fiddly- it will take some skill, patience and practice!

If I do not want to go out in the day time with either of these on, I will do both processes at night before I go to sleep. When I wake up and take it off, the crease will usually stay but if not, I'll use glue lightly. I'd put on the tape first, followed by the glue and push my crease in quite harshly (I'm used to it and it does not hurt me at all). It doesn't matter what you look like as no one will see you!

You should also be able to use eyelash glue. I discovered that they have the same fishy smell and as they're both eye products and glue, it should work the same!
